Home to thousands of acres of parkland, Atlanta, GA, has no shortage of beautiful outdoor spots where you can have a picnic, get some exercise, or just lounge around on a sunny day. Spend some time exploring four of our favorite local parks and you’ll find yourself counting the hours until you can return.

1. Freedom Park

Located at the intersection of North and Moreland avenues, Freedom is the city’s largest linear park, with more than 200 acres of green space connecting seven neighborhoods via a network of walking paths. Keep an eye out as you make your way around and you’ll spot an array of permanent and temporary art installations thanks to Freedom’s designation as an official public art park.

2. Centennial Olympic Park

Head to 265 Park Ave W NW to find Centennial Olympic Park, featuring 22 acres of green space, plazas, and water features created for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. The highlight of the park is the Fountain of Rings, one of the most photographed landmarks in Georgia and a favorite spot for families to cool off in the summer thanks to the water jets that line the rings.

3. Piedmont Park

Piedmont’s 180 acres offer everything you’d hope for from an urban park. In addition to being home to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, this green space includes basketball, tennis, and bocce courts; wooded areas, wetlands, and sprawling fields; and multiple playgrounds. The park also hosts a wide variety of events and activities throughout the year, like a weekly green market, trivia nights, exercise clubs, and children’s story time.

For history buffs, the conservancy offers guided tours that go over the Piedmont’s gradual transformation from a forest to a first-class urban park. Enter 1320 Monroe Dr. into the navigation system in your Maserati Ghibli and you’ll be ready for a smooth ride to take advantage of all Piedmont has to offer.

4. Grant Park

You’ll find Grant — the city’s oldest surviving park — at 840 Cherokee Ave SE. Established in 1883, Grant is great for group activities, with numerous athletic fields, pavilions, and picnic areas scattered throughout. The highlight of the park is Zoo Atlanta, which is home to more than 1,000 animals (many of which are endangered).

After you’ve packed your picnic supplies, finished at the farmer’s market, or wrapped up your workout, you’ll want to be as excited to drive home as you were to head outdoors.
